Sclerotherapy effectively treats varicose and spider veins. It's often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins.
What are thread veins?
Thread veins on the legs (also known as spider veins) are small red blood vessels that run close to the skin’s surface.
As they are superficial, it makes them quite visible, and many people choose to have them removed by a treatment called Sclerotherapy, and at the Female Health Clinic, we use a product called Fibrovein to do this.
What is sclerotherapy for leg veins?
Sclerotherapy is a comfortable treatment and involves injecting a non-toxic liquid into the affected vein, causing the lining of the vein walls to swell and the walls stick together.
This stops the flow of blood and the vein turns into scar tissue. In a few weeks, the vein should fade.
What happens after sclerotherapy treatment?
Post-treatment, it is necessary to wear support tights for two weeks.
The compression support tights play an important part as they keep the vein walls compressed to stop the blood flow from returning to the vein.
When is the best time to have the sclerotherapy treatment?
The winter and autumn months are the best time to have the treatment as wearing the support tights can be a little uncomfortable in the warmer months – plus, legs are ready for dresses, skirts, and shorts when spring arrives!
